When Citizens Say Yes To Casinos

While doing my regular news reading earlier, I stumbled upon a news article talking about how the people in Florida have no problems about the gambling agreement that the Governor made with the Seminole tribe.  This issue has been up in the air for so long now that some might even have forgotten about it.  Trust me, the government hasn’t forgotten.

Anyhow, the article talks about how the residents of the area just want the politicians to quit bickering and get things done (don’t we all?).  Casino Gambling Web has this story:

Now a new Quinnipiac Poll that was released yesterday revealed that Floridians want legislators to stop the politicking and complete the deal with the Seminoles. Sixty-three percent of those polled said they wanted the expanded gambling deal completed.

One of the reasons people in the state might be pushing for the compact is the impact it would have on employment in Florida. It is estimated that 45,000 new jobs would be created by the Seminoles’ casinos expansion. That is a lot of work for a state that has a high unemployment rate.

Sixty-three percent!!! That is a huge majority, isn’t it?  And – correct me if I am wrong –the last time I checked, Florida is part of the United States, which is a democratic country.  Shouldn’t the will of the people be followed in this instance?  Shouldn’t their desire to have the deal over and done with – so that they can find jobs – be fulfilled?  What do you think?
