In spite of the fact that casinos do not always get good publicity (or maybe it is exactly due to that), these establishments actually do partake in good causes. Take for example what is going on in Sin City at the moment. There is this green initiative being put forward by the local government. The idea is to create a local nonprofit organization that will foster green living and consciousness of the environment in general in the area.
The project is spearheaded by local government officials in tandem with two of the biggest names in the world of casinos. The initiative is aptly dubbed green chips, and MSNBC tells us what’s going on:
Its board chairman is Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman; the mayors of suburbs North Las Vegas and Henderson are also on the board. Casino operators Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc., and MGM Mirage are also founding partners of the effort.
The organization will start with small-scale demonstration projects including a solar energy retrofit to help save energy at a local nonprofit agency, and a partnership to provide energy audits to low-income households in Southern Nevada. Several other partnerships are being formed to encourage energy-efficient construction and retrofits in communities throughout the region.
More than encouraging resident of Vegas and other neighboring areas to live more environmentally friendly lives, the project also aims to provide more jobs. Naturally, these jobs are not your run-of-the-mill jobs – they are “green” jobs, which are also good for the Earth. In addition to these, the program also includes plans to provide loans at low interest rates for those interested in improving their homes and businesses in the interest of nature.
