French Opening Up Online Casinos to the Private Sector in 2010

Ya gotta love France.

Yeah…I love their food, but that’s not what I’m talking about.

I mean, if you like online casinos and gambling, you gotta love em because this coming summer 2010, online betting will be legal.

Well, it was legal…as long as two state owned operators ran online poker sites, sports and race betting. Now the private sector will have an opportunity to show what they can do, thanks to a law passed in mid-October.

The French market will give the global online gambling market a new push and develop into one of the key markets worldwide with online poker paving the way.

The online market, currently worth about 300 million Euros annually in terms of gross revenue, is seen growing by nearly 500 percent to more than 1 billion euros. That’s gross revenues.

By both measures – total bets, and gross revenue – that would give online roughly a 20 percent share of the total licensed gambling market in France, based on 2008 figures.

So, like I said…gotta love France.

Maybe someday the U.S. will follow suit.
