Casino Money To Fund Education?

You can just imagine the ruckus that this proposal is creating!  The idea is to use some of the money that casinos are raking in in order to help fund schools and other educational purposes.  This is what some people are aiming for in Missouri.  Naturally, the proposal has its own share of detractors.  Here is a report ran by Ozarks First:

Proposition A passed back in November, but as legislators head back to Jefferson City next week, there are questions about the law meant to fund state education with money spent at Missouri casinos.

“In some ways, it doesn’t matter. For every dollar gambled away, less than a third of it reaches classroom seats.  It’s an awful place to be, to have to count on something that was illegal to rely on such a source for public education.” says Dr. Stephen Kleinsmith, Nixa Schools Superintendent.

I suppose it is all a matter of perspective.  If you indeed do not agree with the basic premise of gambling, then I can understand why you would not want money from such activities to be used for furthering your child’s education.  But then again, it does not really have anything to do with the purpose of education, right?  I mean, as long as the school children are getting what they need in order to become upright adults in the future, shouldn’t that be enough?  It’s not like they will be taught all sorts of bad things simply because the money comes from casinos.
