Strategies, tips and stories about casino gaming and casino life.

No More Riverboat Casino

Riverboat casinos had had their day. As recent as 15 to 20 years ago, riverboat casinos were making it big in different parts of America.  Countless people frequented them, not only for the games, but also for the service.  On Sunday, another riverboat casino was closed down.

Diamond Jo, a longstanding fixture in Dubuque, Iowa was closed down in favor of a gambling complex which is situated just across the street.  TH Online has this story:

The Diamond Jo Casino’s riverboat closed at 2 a.m., concluding a tradition of boat-based gambling that began 17 years ago.

Iowa’s first riverboat casino, the Casino Belle, operated between 1991 and 1993. The Diamond Jo Casino opened May 18, 1994, and was replaced by a larger vessel — the current riverboat — in 1995. A 188,000-square-foot entertainment complex will replace the boat on Thursday, Dec. 11.

That night, the turn out was higher than it normally was.  I suppose many customers went there if only to say that they were at the Diamond Jo the last time it opened its doors to the public.  Yet I am also sure that a good number of people went because of their own attachment to the riverboat casino.  After all, Diamond Jo was more than a gambling place for a lot of people.  Indeed, the same article talked about how people got married there and stuff.  It is always sad to hear about these things.  Then again, it’s not like there will be no more casino in the area – they are just moving shop.

P.S. I know that you have been promised more on pai gow. Don’t worry, I will continue the series on it next time. I just had to share this piece of news.
