Happy New Year For Gamblers In New Mexico

For so long now, the New Mexico government has been trying to say no to opening casinos in their territory.  This new year is bringing with it the winds of change, though.  For the first time in history, the Navajo Nation has opened a casino in New Mexico.  This is AP’s report:

Built on a slice of tribal trust land in northwestern New Mexico, the 64,000 square-foot Fire Rock Casino has 472 slot machines, 8 table games and a poker room. The bingo room seats 400. It is expected to generate $32 million a year for the Navajo Nation, about a fifth of the annual tribal budget.

Some 4,000 people showed up for the Fire Rock Casino’s Nov. 19 opening, with hundreds waiting outside because the facility only holds 1,800, said Patrick Sandoval, chief of staff in the president’s office.
The tent-like structure is temporary until gaming officials can find another site to put up a permanent building, one that may be accompanied by a hotel and truck stop.

Where can you find Fire Rock Casino?  It’s easy:

249 East Historic Highway 66, Church Rock, NM 87311.

Good old Route 66 is the place to go in order to find this new casino.  I tried to find out if they have special events for New Year’s Eve but I couldn’t find anything on their web site.  You can visit it yourself, though, for additional information on their offerings.  Oh yeah, I have been hearing good things about their food at Cheii Bar and Grill.
