Casino Strip To Open In Manila

The Philippines has long been one of the most popular destinations for nationals of western countries. Their friendly and rich culture is perhaps one of the things that attract visitors to this country, not to mention their superb beaches, which are touted to be among the most beautiful in the world. However, it is not commonly associated with casinos and gambling activities – unlike neighboring countries such as Macau and Singapore.
This can all change with the government’s newest project. Dubbed Bagong Nayon Pilipino Entertainment City, the project is currently a vast expanse of empty landfill. Construction on the 150-hectare piece of land is set to start early in 2009, with the idea of having a Vegas-style strip. Bagong Nayon, which is the Tagalog term for New City, is backed up by big names in the government as well as private investors, both local and international.
The main player in this project is the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor), which is the government agency tasked with gambling and gaming activities. According to Rafael Butch Francisco, the current president of Pagcor, Bagong Nayon will be declared an economic tourism zone before this year ends. This means that any foreign investors who choose to take part in the project will enjoy very substantial tax breaks and numerous incentives.
The implications of this development? Local people will have their own stylish venue to gamble AND tourists who love casinos will probably flock even more to this Southeast Asian country.
Now THIS is great gaming news! What do I do now?
