These past months, I have been playing poker more than I have in the whole year. I guess it is because I had not spent much time on the game early in the year and that was taking its toll on me. As such, I have been trying to play catch up before the year ends. In any case, I was again reminded of other poker variations when a friend mentioned pai gow poker the other weekend.
Of course I know about pai gow poker. I have even played it several times online. For those of you who are not very much into it, let me give you an overview of what pai gow poker is all about.
Obviously, the name gives you an idea of the origins of pai gow poker. It is actually a variation of the original Chinese game, pai gow. They are two different things, however. Do not make the mistake of thinking that pai gow and pai gow poker are exactly the same.
In pai gow poker, the objective is to come up with two poker hands out of the seven cards that the dealer gives you. One hand is made up of five cards (also called behind, bottom, or big) while the other is made up of two (also called in front, on top, small, or minor). The deal is that your five-hand card must exceed the value of the two-hand card.
When playing pai gow poker, one player is designated as the banker. It is he whom the other players must beat in order to win the game. In the next posts, we will take a look at the game play in more detail.
