Comp Envy

Within the human nature, there is the tendency to envy others when they have something that you do not. The same thing goes when others receive certain treatment that you would also want to receive. With some casino players, the same principle applies when it comes to comps. In the last post we talked about comps – the freebies that certain people get when they play in the casino. Let us call the attitude towards these freebies comp envy.

Imagine this scenario, a group of guys regularly go to a certain casino to play. They all play at more or less the same tables, same games. Some of them, for one reason or another seem to get preferential treatment from the casino guys. Of course, all of them get one freebie or another. They get the complimentary drink or two. They get some stuff to nibble on from time to time. Yet there are guys who get more freebies than the others. What happens is that those who do not get the better comps start thinking.

What is wrong with them? Why aren’t they getting the same kind of treatment? if you are one of these people, do not fret! There is nothing wrong with you. In fact, in the eyes of seasoned gamblers, you are probably doing things the right way!

The fact is that casinos give comps to those who lose a lot at the tables. That is their way of ensuring that these people will keep coming back to their premises. The more they come back, the more they will lose. The more the casinos will earn money. The next time you feel comp envy, forget about it.
