Gambling Magazine recently published an article about how actual casino staff were becoming addicted to gambling, including a study from Harvard- which reported that the numbers of casino staff addicted to gaming in the United States is as much as thirty percent.
It is perhaps easy to understand how this phenomenon might have occured. Being around players on “the other side of the table” and seeing the sheer multitude and variety of plays, staff are bound to think “I can do better than those idiots!” and thus get lulled into the mindset of that type of gambler who belives he or she will win, by being more experienced and having witnessed all the “angles” and mistakes that other players make.
This, and just “living the life”- often working throughout the night, sleeping through the day- and soaking in all the extremeties of the atmosphere- from exhilerating highs to desperate lows. Seeing people living their lives on the edge, often to a point of destruction, will inevitably have a major psychological impact.
And it’s not just in the United States. The article also talked of how industry watchdog BetSafe had discovered some ten percent of staff had developed a problem in Sydney’s Star Casino. This had been largely uncovered by the fact that employees were taking their vacations in other gambling-related venues.
